Outreach
Volunteers Needed for SWE booth at STEM Expo
May 29 6-8pm At Lompoc High School Cafeteria
SWE booth will include a IR Camera demo and a hands on activity.
Please contact Deb Willems (deb.willems@swe.org) if you have ideas for the activity or are able to help staff the booth Friday night.
Here is more information on the weekends events:
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) Community Outreach will be occurring Friday evening, May 29, 2015, from 6-8 PM, in the cafeteria of Lompoc High School (LHS). We are wanting several different groups to host a booth (teachers, student groups, Santa Barbara & SLO colleges and universities, local companies/businesses that have STEM characteristics as their mission including the military forces). Ideally we would like each booth to have some kind of interactive component or hands-on activity in which the community can engage. We will be targeting K-12 grades but with the idea that the entire family can attend and engage in a STEM festival experience. Our goal is to help our community gain a better understanding of STEM education and the impact on students, college and career opportunities.
Currently we are in the early stages of development, but would like a variety of groups to volunteer to host a booth that will raise the flag for their group name and have something primarily geared for students to engage. A typical booth will probably be 6' x 6' but groups can certainly sign up for more space (double or even triple if need be). Some events will be outdoors and possibly by the swimming pool (for instance Cabrillo High School (CHS) will bring ROVs for maneuvers in the pool), possible rocket launches, and trebuchets will occur outdoors.
Concurrently there will be a Science/Engineering Fair in the LHS gymnasium with judged entries. It is scheduled from 5-8 Friday, May 29 and will continue Saturday, May 30 from 8 am - 8 pm. The primary manpower for this is from Air Force and civil servant volunteers associated with AIAA and the Endeavour Center. Tom Stevens and Edmund Burke, respectively, drive this effort with support from Lompoc Unified School District volunteers. Here is the link to the webpage that we have started. It is under construction and does not have much on the Friday evening community outreach component taking place in the cafeteria and surrounding areas, but will as things develop: www.CCSTEMExpo.org.
